Your Thermostat is on the Wrong Setting
This may sound like an obvious solution, but it’s easy to forget to switch your thermostat from heating back to cooling. In some parts of Florida, you may find yourself using both settings just in one 24-hour period!
If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, your first look should be at the thermostat settings. Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool” before you take any additional action.
Broken Circuit
Abnormal activity from your air conditioner may be due to a lack of power.
Air conditioners require a lot of power to run, and if a circuit breaks, your unit won’t function properly. Check your electrical panel and look for broken fuses if your air conditioning unit is behaving oddly.
Your Refrigerant Is Low
If your refrigerant is over or undercharged, you might experience hot air coming out of your air conditioner. Other symptoms of this issue are ice on the refrigerant line and gurgling noises.
Refrigerant is also called “coolant,” and it is extremely toxic. If you think there is something wrong with your air conditioning unit’s refrigerant levels, you should call an expert immediately. This isn’t a project you should try to tackle yourself.
Also, bear in mind that this kind of issue requires a technical fix in addition to adjusting refrigerant levels. Usually, if your refrigerant levels are low, it means you are experiencing a leak somewhere along the line.
Your Air Filter Is Dirty
As you operate your air conditioning unit, your air filter will get dirty. This is normal. However, if you allow your air filter to remain this way, more pressing air conditioner issues will arise.
If your air filter is dirty for too long, your evaporator coil will also get dirty. If the evaporator coil becomes dirty with debris, you will start to experience a frozen coil. This will clog the airflow and the only air you will get out of your unit will be hot air from the motor.
During a hot Florida summer, you should anticipate changing your air filter at least once per month. Sometimes they can last longer with intermittent use.
To check, hold your filter up to the light. If no light can get through, you need a new filter. Be sure to work this into your routine maintenance schedule for your air conditioning unit.
